HVIAC Players of the Week - April 8

Men's Tennis Player of the Week

Elliott Warkus, Sarah Lawrence

Junior • Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School

Warkus won five of six matches in a 1-2 week for the Gryphons. Making on his second-ever appearance in the No. 1 singles position, he picked up a win against York, while he added HVIAC wins against Webb and Culinary in the No. 2 singles position. At No. 1 doubles, he went 2-1 on the week with wins over York and Webb.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week

Ahmed Aly, Vaughn

Freshman • Astoria, N.Y.

Aly was the lead point producer for the Warriors compiling a 3-3 record on the week and 2-1 in singles play. Aly won both his singles and doubles matches against Webb Institute pulling out a gritty 8-6 win at No. 1 singles and cruising to a 10-2 triumph at No. 1 doubles with Kent Ogisu.

Men's Volleyball Player of the Week

Ishaan Pujari, Sarah Lawrence

Junior • Outside Hitter • Bangalore, India/Inventure Academy

In the Gryphons' final two regular-season matches, Pujari totaled 42 kills (5.25 per set) and collected 27 digs (3.38 per set) earning a pair of double-doubles in league matches against Webb and St. Joseph's. The junior outside hitter also recorded a team-high five blocks on the week. With his efforts, Pujari surpassed 300 career kills and took over as the SLC leader in the category.

Men's Volleyball Rookie of the Week

Nikos Efstratudakis, Sarah Lawrence

Freshman • Setter • London, Ontario/American Community School of Athens

Efstratudakis recorded 52 assists (6.50 per set) in two matches last week. He also contributed seven digs and three blocks. The rookie Gryphon stepped into the setter role late in the season and has amassed a team-high 161 assists. SLC's hitting percentage has improved by 16 percent since Efstratudakis took over as setter.

Softball Player of the Week

Kayla Applebaum, Yeshiva

Senior • Senior • Teaneck, N.J./Ma'ayanot Yeshiva

Applebaum batted .583 (7-for-12) on the week and collected eight RBI, four runs and a double in helping lead the Maccabees to their first varsity wins in program history with a sweep of New Rochelle. 

Softball Pitcher of the Week

Jamilynn McGowan, St. Joseph's

Freshman • Utility • Staten Island, N.Y./Michael J. Petrides

McGowan had a spectacular week in the circle for St. Joseph’s, going 2-1 with a 1.42 ERA in 19 2/3 innings, allowing only four earned runs in three complete games. The freshman had a dominant one-hit effort against HVIAC foe New Rochelle, striking out eight in rainy and windy conditions to secure her first collegiate win. McGowan picked up her second win of the week against Lehman on Sunday. She also helped herself at the plate vs. New Rochelle, going 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Softball Rookie of the Week

Kristin Ferrigno, St. Joseph's

Freshman • Third Baseman • Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney

Ferrigno receives Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season after batting .471 (8-for-17) on the week with a team-high seven RBI also scoring two runs as St. Joseph’s went 3-2 on the week. The freshman third baseman went a perfect 3-for-3 against conference opponent New Rochelle on Friday, driving in three runs. Ferrigno concluded the week with a 4-for-7 day at the plate with four RBI in the Lady Bears sweep of Lehman on Sunday.

Honor Roll

Glenn Burnett, Webb  •  Men's Tennis

Burnett secured two convincing victories in singles play dropping only one game in 10-1 and 10-0 match wins over Sarah Lawrence and Vaughn.

Kevin Caicedo, St. Joseph's  •  Men's Tennis

Caicedo rallied from one set down to secure his first collegiate victory with a three-set triumph at No. 3 singles against Lehman, the lone singles win for the Bears so far this season. 

Tori Himes, Sarah Lawrence  •  Softball

Himes hit in three straight games this week, batting 3-for-9 and reaching base in half of her plate appearances. On the week, she hit her second double of the season and scored twice. She drew three walks and notched her second stolen base of the season. 

Brian Mills, Webb  •  Men's Volleyball

Mills led the Webbies posting 14 kills with a .385 hitting percentage and nine digs in a five-set conference win over Sarah Lawrence.

Cassandra Molinari, St. Joseph's  •  Softball

Molinari had another effective week at the plate, batting .500 (8-for-16) as St. Joseph’s went 3-2 on the week. The catcher/second baseman recorded a hit in four of the five games, including three multi-hit games and had five RBI on the week. The junior went a perfect 3-for-3 versus in conference play versus New Rochelle on Friday with three RBI, a run scored and a double.

Jared Rechnitz, Yeshiva  •  Men's Volleyball

Rechnitz totaled 38 kills (2.92 per set) and 27 digs (2.08 per set) over a four-match week for the Maccabees. During a 3-0 win over Webb, the senior outside hitter put down 10 kills and landed six aces.

Megan Slack, Culinary  •  Men's Tennis

Slack went 2-0 for the Steels from the No. 6 singles position with wins over Cooper Union and Sarah Lawrence.

Raul Urshela, St. Joseph's  •  Men's Volleyball

Urshela led the Bears to a straight-set league win over Sarah Lawrence with a team-high-tying 10 kills along with a match-high six blocks and four aces.  

Rachel Walker, Webb  •  Men's Tennis

Walker contributed to the Webbies conference win over Vaughn with a victory at love in her No. 4 singles match and an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Walker narrowly missed going undefeated in singles play falling in a tiebreaker in her other match vs. Sarah Lawrence.
