Men’s Soccer Rolls to Victory in HVMAC Opener

Box Score
YONKERS, N.Y. – Gryphons Rodrigo Cuenca (San Diego, Calif., La Jolla Country Day) and Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India, Inventure Academy) both posted multiple-goal efforts to lift Sarah Lawrence College over Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology, 4-1, in Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference soccer action at Tibbetts Brook Park on Monday.

Vaughn College (0-1, 0-1 HVMAC) struck first blood in the 11th minute, when senior Bismark Opoku fed a pass up the middle to sophomore Amir Karim, who had little trouble finding the back of the net to earn the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Karim would finish the game with a team-high four shots.

Sarah Lawrence (1-1, 1-0 HVMAC) equalized in the 16th minute, as Cuenca tallied his first goal of the season from six yards out, capitalizing on a deflected pass from Pujari. Despite tense moments on both ends of the field, the teams entered the intermission deadlocked at 1-1.

Nearly two-thirds of the second stanza elapsed before the tie was broken in the 70th minute. On a through-pass up the middle from Cuenca, Pujari calmly slotted the ball into the goal to give the Gryphons their first lead of the season, 2-1.

With the momentum in their favor, the Gryphons continued to keep the pressure on the Warriors, and in the 76th minute, Pujari returned the favor with a feed to Cuenca, who found the bottom left corner of the net to extend the lead to 3-1 with less than 15 minutes remaining.

Pujari iced the game in the 84th minute when he broke through Vaughn's back line on a pass from sophomore Sebastian Hermann (Munich, Germany, Wilhelmsgymnasium). Pujari's fourth goal in two games sealed the 4-1 victory for Sarah Lawrence.

In the net, sophomore Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i, Parker School) was challenged little, as the Gryphon notched only a single save on the day. At the other end, Vaughn junior Jorge Sanchez stopped four shots on goal.

Sarah Lawrence hits the road for Albany this weekend, facing The Sage Colleges on Saturday at 2 p.m. before taking on Albany College of Pharmacy at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
