Panthers Fall to MCLA in Overtime

Albany, N.Y. – The Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences women's soccer team (3-1-1) suffered its first loss of the 2013 season Thursday afternoon, falling 2-1 in overtime to the visiting Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (3-3-0) at the ACPHS Soccer Field. Junior striker Sarah Cope (Broadalbin, N.Y.) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the year to lead ACPHS.

Cope opened the scoring for the Panthers in the 23rd minute when she took a pass from freshman Kayli Smith (Rome, N.Y.), dribbled around the oncoming MCLA goalkeeper and finished from near the touch line. The assist was Smith's fourth of the season.

That score would hold up until halftime, but MCLA would strike just 47 seconds into the second period. A ball played into the box ricocheted off several Panthers defenders before settling on the foot of Jackie Dwyer, who put home her first goal of the season to tie the score 1-1.

The Blazers had a pair of excellent scoring chances go by the board midway through the second half, including a goal called back on an offsides call, as the contest remained knotted at one apiece after 90 minutes of regulation.

Once again it would be MCLA with the quick strike in the extra session as Natalie Caney put a Jennifer Ferrari pass in the back of the net after just 74 seconds of overtime for the 2-1 final score.

Freshman Amy Jagareski made a career-high nine saves in net for ACPHS while her Blazers counterpart Danielle Heinsohn had one save. MCLA outshot the Panthers 20-7 while corner kicks stood at an even 6-6.

The Panthers will be back in action at 1:00 pm this Sunday on the road against HVIAC rival Sarah Lawrence.
