Women’s Tennis Clipped by Cooper Union

FLUSHING, N.Y.—
In a tightly-contested match, Sarah Lawrence College women's tennis was edged by non-conference opponent Cooper Union, 5-4, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Friday.

In doubles action, Sarah Lawrence (3-5) rookies Autumn Atkinson (Manasquan, N.J./George School) and Juliet Slade (St. Paul, Minn./Central) cruised to an 8-1 win in the No. 3 pairs position, improving their record on the season to 7-0 as a partnership. Cooper Union went on to win the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles spots, giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

SLC's rookies continued to shine in individual matches, with three newcomers picking up points for the Green and White. Atkinson won her second match of the day by taking the No. 3 match by a 10-4 margin.

At No. 5 singles, Moni Spancheska (Skopje, Macedonia/NOVA International) defeated her Cooper Union opponent 10-3, while SLC's Cecilia Ross (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) came away with a 10-5 triumph in the No. 6 match.

The host Hawks made the most of the top positions, taking a 10-6 win at No. 1 and a 10-5 victory at No. 2 singles. In the No. 4 singles match, Juliet Slade (St. Paul, Minn./Central) was toppled by Janet Butler, 10-7, clinching the match for Cooper Union.

Women's tennis continues road play on Tuesday with a match at York College (N.Y.) at 4 p.m. The Gryphons then travel to face Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Pratt Institute on Saturday.
