Men’s Soccer Hit with Loss to Berkeley N.J.

Box Score
YONKERS, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer lost to non-conference opponent Berkeley College (N.J.) by a 13-2 margin at Tibbetts Brook Park on Wednesday.

Sarah Lawrence (2-6) recorded the first shot of the game after one minute, as a strike by sophomore Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India, Inventure Academy) missed just left of the net. Though the match remained scoreless through 13 minutes, Berkeley tallied its first three goals in a period spanning only two minutes.

Trailing 4-0 in the 23rd minute, Sarah Lawrence got on the scoreboard with the first career goal of rookie Pragyan Ghimire (Kathmandu, Nepal, Ullens School), who capitalized on a Pujari cross with a high shot that found the back of the net.

Berkeley (5-6) responded by tallying four goals in a three minute span from the 28th to the 31st minute of the match. Thomas Cruz (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) earned a hat trick with three of the four goals.

Later in the opening half, Pujari injected a crossing pass into a crowded penalty area. Junior Rodrigo Cuenca (San Diego, Calif., La Jolla Country Day) came up with the possession and slotted a shot from 10 yards out to make it an 8-2 game.

After the intermission, the Knights kept firm control of the match, allowing only one Gryphon shot in the second half. After scoring a trio of goals early in the half, Berkeley tacked on two more scores in the final 10 minutes of the game, and Berkeley walked away with its decisive victory.

Sarah Lawrence sophomore Julian Bonte-Friedheim (Milan, Italy, International School of Milan) had two first-half saves, while first-year keeper Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela, ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)) entered the game and made nine more stops.

For Berkeley, Thiago Cruz (Kearny, N.J./Kearny), Keston Miguel (Paterson, N.J./Eastside) and Kevin Ortiz (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) all scored a pair of goals. Ramon Arce (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards), Shawn Duda (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus), Luis Godinez (Paterson, N.J./PCTI) and Eucario Solano (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) rounded out the scoring for the Knights.

Sarah Lawrence returns to the pitch on Saturday, when the Gryphons travel to face Culinary Institute of America in a Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference (HVMAC) showdown. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
