Men’s Soccer Slips to Mount Saint Vincent in Opener

Box Score
YONKERS, N.Y. – Sophomore Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India, Inventure Academy) netted a pair of goals for the Gryphons, but a late goal sealed the game as Sarah Lawrence College fell to College of Mount Saint Vincent, 3-2, in non-conference play at Tibbetts Brook Park on Saturday evening.

Wet and stormy conditions nearly postponed the evening game, but the rivals took the field and sloshed their way through a hard-fought match.

In the 22nd minute, Mount Saint Vincent struck first, as Matthew Samaan scored the game's opening goal on a cross from Andres Oceguera.

Just over 90 seconds later, senior Harper Hunt (Paris, Texas, Paris) fed Pujari on a long breakaway, and the sophomore was able to take the ball the final 25 yards across the goal line. The goal marked a milestone for the Gryphons, as it was the team's first score in the program's NCAA era.

With the score knotted, 1-1, Mount Saint Vincent's Ahmed Ajao slotted a shot just out of reach of Sarah Lawrence goalkeeper Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i, Parker School), but senior defender Nathan Thompson (Portland, Ore., Lake Oswego) made a stunning play to deflect the attempt and preserve the tie.

Mount Saint Vincent capitalized on a late effort in the waning seconds of the first half. With 23.3 seconds remaining until the break, outstanding maneuvers from William Gutelius put the ball in the back of the net and lifted the Dolphins to a 2-1 halftime lead.

The Gryphons rallied in the second half, as pressure from the Sarah Lawrence front line earned a corner kick in the 56th minute. The service of junior Rodrigo Cuenca (San Diego, Calif., La Jolla Country Day) found the head of Pujari, who successfully tied the score again at 2-2.

As the rain continued to fall, the match seemed destined for overtime, but Mount Saint Vincent freshman Tajay Simon pulled out the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to lift his team to victory; Eric Lara assisted the game's fifth goal.

Warkus totaled five saves for Sarah Lawrence, while Mount Saint Vincent's Barkel Foster stopped only one shot on goal.

The hard-hitting match saw 40 fouls called, while half a dozen players were booked with cautions.

Sarah Lawrence returns to Tibbetts Brook Park on Monday when the Gryphons host Vaughn at 7 p.m.
