The King's College Slips Past Basketball

Box Score
BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—After the Gryphons rallied from a 14-point deficit to take the lead in the second half, Sarah Lawrence College eventually fell to The King's College, 60-50, in a non-conference game at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Wednesday evening.

The King's College (2-11) came out firing and scored nine straight points, including five from David Dantzler (Fayetteville, Ark., Shiloh Christian) to take an 11-2 advantage. The visitors took their largest lead of the game minutes later when Dantzler added a jumper to put his team in front, 18-4.

Sarah Lawrence (4-9) answered by going on a 12-0 streak that saw senior Zhiyan Yang (China) convert back-to-back three-point baskets. Bolstered by six first-half points by junior Greg Smith (Tampa, Fla., Gaither) and senior Francis Oppong (Brooklyn, N.Y., Erasmus), the Gryphons cut the gap to one to enter halftime trailing 20-19.

Oppong scored the first basket of the second half to give Sarah Lawrence its first lead of the game. Teammate Malcolm Knowles (Houston, Texas, School of the Woods) followed with another bucket to give the Green and White its largest lead at 23-20.

The Lions wiped out the lead but were unable to pull away for most of the half. Oppong regained the lead for Sarah Lawrence at 36-35 before Lion Greg Baumann (Wilmington, Del./Tall Oaks) sank a free throw to tie the game for the sixth time.

Soon, however, Dantler caught fire to break open a Lions lead. He contributed 16 points in the final nine minutes of the game to round out 24 points in the half. He sank five baskets from beyond the arc and added another nine points from the charity stripe, totaling a game-high 34 points on the night. Baumann scored 10 for The King's College.

For the Gryphons, Smith picked up his third straight double-double, tallying 16 points and 14 rebounds. He also had a game-high six steals. Oppong followed with 15 points, while Yang hit double digits with 10 points in his season debut. Knowles collected nine rebounds, while Oppong picked up eight on the day.

Sarah Lawrence returns to the court on Monday when the Gryphons host Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference opponent Vaughn College for a 7 p.m. game.
