Basketball Downed by Cooper Union

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Despite an 11-point, 12-rebound effort by Gryphon Greg Smith (Tampa, Fla., Gaither), Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball fell to non-conference opponent Cooper Union, 58-36, at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Wednesday.

Before the game, Sarah Lawrence's four graduating seniors—Daniel Bark (Malibu, Calif., Malibu), John Collector (Santa Barbara, Calif., Dos Pueblos), Francis Oppong (Brooklyn, N.Y., Erasmus) and Zhiyan Yang (Hangzhou, China, Hangzhou Foreign Language)—were recognized in a brief ceremony.

Cooper Union held the Gryphons scoreless through nearly four minutes of play as the visitors took a 6-0 lead to start the game. Cooper Union took a double-digit lead at 14-4 and held its largest first-half advantage at 30-15. Sophomore Malcolm Knowles (Houston, Texas, School of the Woods) scored a Sarah Lawrence-leading eight points in the opening period, which concluded with the Green and White trailing, 32-19.

Cooper Union's momentum continued in the second half, as Sarah Lawrence had trouble getting its offense going. The visitors accrued their largest lead at 56-21 before the Gryphons rallied to end the game on a 15-2 run. Sarah Lawrence capitalized on defensive pressure, scoring 15 points off turnovers in the game, but the effort fell short for the team's eighth-straight loss.

Smith's double-double is his fifth of the season and second straight. Behind Knowles' eight points, Collector finished with five. Collector also trailed only smith in rebounding as the senior tallied seven boards on the day. Knowles, Smith and Yang notched three steals apiece.

Sarah Lawrence (4-15) concludes its season at the Landmark College Click Invitational on Saturday, February 23.
