NEWBURGH, N.Y.—
In the team's final race of the regular season, Sarah Lawrence College cross country competed at the Mount Saint Mary College Knight Invitational on Saturday. Backed by a second-place finish by sophomore Mary Kauffman (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead), the Gryphon women captured seventh place overall, while the SLC men took 14th-place at the event.

For the third time in the last four meets, Kauffman was the second women's runner across the line. Her time of 20:52 marked her second time this season below the 21-minute mark on a 5K course. In the final meters of the race, Kauffman triumphed in a three-way sprint, defeating opponents from SUNY Cobleskill and Union College by mere seconds.

Rookie Natalie Grieco (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Fenwick) returned to form as the Gryphons' No. 2 runner. She took 38th place in the field of 144 runners, posting a mark of 23:32. Elizabeth Emery (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) was the next Gryphon across the line, slipping in under the 8-minute-mile mark with an effort of 24:34, good for 58th place.

Kate Cassirer (Manhattan, N.Y./Spence School) nipped the 26-minute mark by crossing the line in 74th place at 25:59. Junior Hillary Bernhardt (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) posted a time of 27:13 for 94th place, while Katie Zimmermann (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) rounded out the team in 28:49 for 110th overall.

The SLC men were again led by Caleb Jaster (New Hampton, N.H./Sant Bani), who placed in the top half of the 126-man field with a time of 34:13 for 62nd place. Rookie Pat Newsom (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) followed with a time of 35:44 on the 8K course, earning 76th place on the day.

Justin Heftel (Spokane, Wash./Saint George's School) just missed the 40-minute mark, sliding in at 40:02. Senior Luc Mitchell (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) finished the course with a time of 41:49, and rookie Jacob Zhu (Shanghai, China/Shanghai Jianping) posted a career-best performance of 43:36 to complete the Green and White team score.

Sarah Lawrence now prepares for the 2013 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Championship, set for Sunday, October 20, at Bard College. The men's race is slated for 11 a.m., with the women taking off at noon.
