Basketball Tripped Up by Bard

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Despite the return of the Gryphons' leading scorer, Greg Smith (Tampa, Fla., Gaither), Sarah Lawrence College basketball was unable to keep pace with Bard College and fell, 86-22, in a non-conference game on Saturday.

Bard (1-4) earned its first win of the season after scoring the first 21 points of the game. The Raptors opened up a 39-7 lead by halftime and outscored the Gryphons 47-15 in the second half.

Sarah Lawrence (3-6) picked up seven points in the opening half, including three points from rookie Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela, ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)). Seniors Smith and John Collector (Santa Barbara, Calif., Dos Pueblos) each contributed a pair of points in the first period.

Playing in his first game after missing action due to an ankle injury, Smith scored nine more points in the second half for a team-high 11 on the day. Sophomore Malcolm Knowles (Houston, Texas, School of the Woods) entered the scorebook with two successful free throws, and senior Daniel Bark (Malibu, Calif., Malibu) scored a season-high four points, all in the second half.

Senior Francis Oppong (Brooklyn, N.Y., Erasmus) totaled a team-high six rebounds in the game with three at each end of the floor. Sucre led the Green and White in assists and steals.

Bard's Frank Stortini (Red Hook, N.Y., Red Hook) led all players with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the game. Jose Canario (Middletown, N.Y., Middletown) also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Three other Raptors scored in double figures.

Sarah Lawrence returns home for three games to round out calendar year. The Gryphons host Vassar College on Monday at 8 p.m. and The New School on Thursday at 7 p.m. The month concludes with a showdown against Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference opponent Culinary Institute of America on Sat., Dec. 15 at 2 p.m.
