Basketball Beats Webb for Series Sweep

Box Score
BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Led by double-double efforts by seniors John Collector (Santa Barbara, Calif., Dos Pueblos) and Francis Oppong (Brooklyn, N.Y., Erasmus), Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball defeated Webb Institute, 40-22, in a non-conference game at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Monday.

By completing the two-game sweep of Webb (1-4), Sarah Lawrence (3-4) has earned its most wins in a season since going 3-12 in the 2008-09 campaign.

Collector led out the Gryphons in the first half with a pair of three-point baskets to accompany eight rebounds in the opening period. Oppong and Malcolm Knowles (Houston, Texas, School of the Woods) also contributed a half-dozen points as the Gryphons carried a 24-9 advantage into the intermission.

In the second half, the Webbies' offense sank more than twice the number of field goals than their first-half total, preventing Sarah Lawrence from expanding the lead. The Green and White outscored the visitors by only three points in the second stanza, cruising to the 40-22 victory.

Collector finished the game with 10 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Oppong totaled 12 points and 13 rebounds for his third double-double in a four-game stretch.

Knowles finished the game with eight points and added five steals on the defensive side of the ball. Campbell Jackson (Washington, D.C., The Field School) matched Oppong with a team-high 13 rebounds, while rookie Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela, ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)) dished out five assists in the game.

For Webb, Andrew Ko led the team with eight points, while Brian Mills had a team-high 10 rebounds.

Sarah Lawrence hits the road for its next two games. After a visit to College of Mount Saint Vincent at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the Gryphons travel to face Bard College at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Green and White close out the calendar year with a three-game homestand beginning with a showdown against Vassar College on Monday, Dec. 10, at 8 p.m.
