Basketball Drops Season Opener at Rivier

Box Score
NASHUA, N.H.—The Gryphons' first outing of the season was a rough one, as Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball fell to the host Raiders, 87-36, in the opening game of the 2012 Rivier University Coca-Cola Tip Off Tournament at Muldoon Gymnasium on Friday.

Rivier (2-0) opened the game on a 16-0 run and broke open a 25-5 advantage midway through the opening half before expanding the margin to 44-15 at halftime.

In the second half, the Raiders held Sarah Lawrence scoreless for more than eight minutes before the Gryphons snapped the drought. Rivier's largest lead came at 77-16 near the midpoint of the period.

The young Sarah Lawrence offense finally found a toehold in the waning minutes of the game. The Gryphons outscored the Raiders 20-10 down the stretch, and junior transfer Greg Smith (Tampa, Fla., Gaither) sank back-to-back three pointers to end the game.

Smith ended the day with a team-high 11 points, scoring nine of them from beyond the arc. Senior John Collector (Santa Barbara, Calif., Dos Pueblos) contributed eight points, while classmate Francis Oppong (Brooklyn, N.Y., Erasmus) added eight points and a game-high eight rebounds.

For the Raiders, three players finished in double-figures, led by Tom Poitras (Bow, N.H., Bow) and Richard Belding (Wilmington, Mass., Wilmington) with 13 points apiece.

Sarah Lawrence (0-1) looks to rebound on Saturday at noon when the team faces the loser of Friday evening's nightcap between Endicott College and Framingham State University.
