BRONX, N.Y.—A runner-up effort by sophomore
Mary Kauffman (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) highlighted Sarah Lawrence College cross country's performance at the College of Staten Island Developmental Meet at Van Courtlandt Park on Sunday. The Gryphon women placed 6th in a field of 17 scoring teams, while the men took 19th of 23 squads.
Kauffman stuck with the leaders for the entire race, crossing the 5K finish line in 23:22.2, just 16 seconds behind the race winner. The sophomore broke up the pack of St. Joseph's Long Island harriers, which took four of the top five positions to take the team title. Kauffman's runner-up finish is her second of the year, following the Queensborough Community College Invitational, run on the same course two weeks prior.
Elizabeth Emery (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) stepped up to be SLC's No. 2 runner for the first time in her career. The junior posted a time of 27:46.3, good for 39th place. Sophomore
Pauline Stanfiel (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) was the next runner across the line, stopping the clock at 27:52.2.

Rookie
Natalie Grieco (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Fenwick) was the fourth Gryphon to finish, posting a mark of 29:44.9. SLC's
Kate Cassirer (Manhattan, N.Y./Spence School) was next in 31:24.9, and sophomore
Katie Zimmermann (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) completed the team in 32:30.3.

On the men's side, Gryphon
Caleb Jaster (New Hampton, N.H./Sant Bani) paced the Green and White with an 8K run of 34:15.7, good for 77th on the day. Rookie
Pat Newsom (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) followed in a time of 35:39.2, claiming 94th place.
First-year runners Stian Loathe and
Justin Heftel (Spokane, Wash./Saint George's School) came next, posting times of 36:23.9 and 38:32.3, respectively. The Gryphons were rounded out by senior
Luc Mitchell (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), in 40:55.7, and newcomer
Jacob Zhu (Shanghai, China/Shanghai Jianping), who made his career debut in 43:49.1.
