BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Despite a game-high 19 points by Gryphon
Greg Smith (Tampa, Fla., Gaither), Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball fell to non-conference opponent NYU Poly, 84-43, at Jacobs Gymnasium on Monday.
Sarah Lawrence (0-3) hung with the Fighting Blue Jays through the game's opening minutes, but NYU Poly (1-2) went on a 14-0 run to open up an 18-4 lead after eight minutes elapsed. The hosts extended the advantage to 48-22 by halftime and out-scored the Gryphons by a 36-21 margin in the second half.
Smith led Sarah Lawrence in scoring for the third-straight game as the junior transfer tallied 19 points, including a 6-for-6 effort from the free-throw line. Smith also added nine boards on defense to lead all players in rebounds.
Senior
Francis Oppong (Brooklyn, N.Y., Erasmus) matched Smith's nine-rebound performance and added nine points for the Gryphons. Classmate
John Collector (Santa Barbara, Calif., Dos Pueblos) also contributed a season-high nine points.
On the defensive side, Sarah Lawrence notched a season-high five steals and forced 19 NYU Poly turnovers. The Gryphons also held the Fighting Blue Jays to 3-for-15 (.200) shooting from beyond the arc.
Sarah Lawrence takes a brief hiatus for Thanksgiving break before returning to action on Wednesday, Nov. 28, when the Gryphons travel to take on Webb Institute in Glen Cove, N.Y., at 7 p.m.
