BRONX, N.Y.—
Backed by a second-place performance by sophomore Mary Kauffman (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead), Sarah Lawrence College women's and men's cross country competed at the Queensborough Community College Invitational at Van Courtlandt Park on Sunday. The Gryphons placed fourth as a team in the women's race, while the men finished in 15th.

"The Van Courtlandt course is one of the hardest in the region," notes Head Coach Erin Pomykala. "The teams did amazingly well considering the competition in the field. This was a victory for our team."

On the women's side, Kauffman completed the 5K course in 21:08.0 to finish as the No. 2 runner in a field of 128 entries. She crossed the line just 18 seconds behind the day's winner and continued her streak of seven races as the Gryphon's top woman.

Making her collegiate debut, rookie Natalie Grieco (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Fenwick) was SLC's second runner to finish. Her time of 24:15.0 was good enough for 25th place overall. Also racing for the first time in 2013, junior Elizabeth Emery (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) posted a solid time of 24:31.7, 29th in the field.

Sophomore Pauline Stanfiel (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) posted a mark of 24:47.3 to earn 32nd place. She improved on her time from the previous week (25:58.85) by more than a minute. Rookie Kate Cassirer (Manhattan, N.Y./Spence School) bettered her previous race by nearly three minutes and came in at 26:49.2.

Sophomore Katie Zimmermann (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) also improved on her previous race with her time of 28:07.0, while Hillary Bernhardt (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) beat the 30-minute mark (29:15.5) in her collegiate debut.

As a group, the Gryphons accumulated 108 points for fourth place in a field of 12 teams.

In the men's race, sophomore Caleb Jaster (New Hampton, N.H./Sant Bani) finished 40th in a field of 130 runners. His time of 33:16.3 on the 8K course was a 20-second improvement from last weekend's race at Purchase College. Rookie Pat Newsom (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) finished in 33:54.3, earning 55th place in his collegiate debut.

First-year harrier Stian Lothe (Bergen, Norway/Akademiet Bergen) clocked in at 36:45.1 in his debut, placing 79th overall. Rookie Justin Heftel (Spokane, Wash./Saint George's School) had a one-minute improvement over last week to finish in 39:33.5, while senior Luc Mitchell (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) made his 2013 debut in 39:35.9.

Sarah Lawrence next heads to Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. on Saturday to race in the Bard College Invitational.
