Basketball Triumphs over The New School

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Backed by a pair of Gryphons with double-digit scoring, Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball triumphed over The New School, 43-33, at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Thursday.

With the win, Sarah Lawrence (4-7) earned its most wins in a season since going 6-10 in 2007-08.

The Narwhals gained early momentum and a 13-7 lead thanks to senior Tom Pierce (Salt Lake City, Utah), who scored eight first-half points.

From there, Sarah Lawrence went on a 16-2 run, fueled by nine points from senior Greg Smith (Tampa, Fla., Gaither) and five from classmate Francis Oppong (Brooklyn, N.Y., Erasmus), giving the Green and White a 23-15 break at the lead. Smith totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds in the opening period, securing his first double-double of the season.

In the second half, The New School closed the gap and leveled the score at 27-27 thanks to a diverse 12 points scored by four different players. The Gryphons then scored 13 unanswered points, including four each by sophomore Malcolm Knowles (Houston, Texas, School of the Woods) and rookie Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela, ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)).

Despite a half dozen late points by the Narwhals, Sarah Lawrence was able to secure the 43-33 win and the team's most victories in half a decade.

Smith totaled a season-high 20 points and 17 rebounds for Sarah Lawrence, while Oppong totaled 12 points and seven rebounds in the game. Sucre finished the game with a season-high 12 rebounds.

Knowles contributed six points on the day, while senior John Collector (Santa Barbara, Calif., Dos Pueblos) pitched in eight rebounds.

For The New School, Shane Galvin (New York, N.Y.) scored a team-high 15 points, and Pierce reached double-figures with 10. Brothers Louis Amania (New York, N.Y.) and junior Ty Amania (New York, N.Y.) shared a team-high nine rebounds apiece.

The Gryphons wrap up the week with Sarah Lawrence's final contest of 2012. The Green and White play host to Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference foe Culinary Institute of America on Saturday at 2 p.m.
