Panthers Win Apothecary Cup in Double Overtime Thriller

BOX SCORE

In one of the most thrilling games in recent history in the confines of the Albert M. White Gymnasium, the ACPHS men's basketball team defeated the St. Louis College of Pharmacy 90-83 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon. The second game in "The Battle for the Apothecary Cup" proved to be one for the ages as ACPHS made an incredible comeback in the second half, and pulled out the victory in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

Casey Redfern scored 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds for ACPHS, while Ryan McVaigh continued his strong play with 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Steven Brown (15 points) and John Tremblay (10 points) also were in double-figures for the Panthers.

The opening 20 minutes belonged to the Eutectics as ACPHS fell behind 43-29 at halftime as the Panthers shot just 31% from the field as they dug themselves a big hole. The visitors maintained a 14-point lead with just under 15 minutes to play in the game when ACPHS started to heat up from the field and picked up the pressure on the defensive end. Over the next nine minutes, the Panthers went on a 23-7 run to get themselves right back into the game as they received key baskets from Redfern, Brown, Paul Nolan and Desmond Henderson in the stretch.

The game went back and forth in the final minutes as neither team was able to pull away. With St. Louis College of Pharmacy up two points, McVaigh scored on a tough layup to even the game, and both defenses held strong in the final couple of possessions to send the game into overtime.

Early in the first overtime, Redfern fouled out with the game tied at 70. The Panthers were able to take a three-point lead on two free throws from Tremblay, but the Eutectics answered with a three-point shot with just 16 seconds to play and the game went into a second overtime. Finally, ACPHS was able to pull away as Tremblay scored five points in the second overtime to help the team clinch the victory.

The Panthers were presented with "The Apothecary Cup" after the game as they will now hold onto the trophy for the year.
