2008 Tournament MVP

Jon Matzelle  •  St. Joseph's College
Freshman  •  Forward  •  Queens, NY (St. Francis Prep)

St. Joseph’s freshman Jon Matzelle - a six-time HVMAC Rookie of the Week selection during the 2007-08 season - was named the MVP of the 2008 HVMAC Basketball Championship Tournament after two outstanding games in leading SJC to its first-ever HVMAC Tournament Championship. The center notched two double-doubles, scoring 23 points and adding 12 rebounds during a 90- 66 semifinal win over Sarah Lawrence on Sunday, and scoring 26 points and 13 rebounds as St. Joseph’s broke open a halftime tie and took home the HVMAC crown, 74-54 on Sunday. He averaged 24.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game for the tournament, and shot better than 60% during the two games.

2007-08 Coach of the Year

Joseph Cocozello  •  St. Joseph's College

‘The waiting is over’ and St. Joseph’s Head Coach Joe Cocozello has finally won the HVMAC Basketball Tournament crown. After three consecutive regular season championships and trips to the HVMAC Championship Game only to be thwarted in the finals by Berkeley, Cocozello coached the Bears to a 74-54 win over the Knights on Sunday. Cocozello, who has led St. Joseph’s to more than 100 wins during his six seasons patrolling the Bear sidelines, guided the Bears through major adversity this year as SJC lost seven out of eight games during one stretch early in the year, but rebounded to play their best basketball late in the season. SJC won its final four HVMAC games and finished the season 12-15 against some of the best competition in the NYC Metropolitan area.
