The King's College Lady Lions Soccer Team (in only their second year as a varsity sport and first year in the conference) advanced to the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game with their 5-1 win yesterday over the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons. Freshman midfielder Kasey Sisson opened the scoring just 7 minutes in off a feed from fellow freshman Jessica Burchman. TKC opened a 2-0 lead 11 minutes later on a goal from Caitlin Essex, her ninth of the season. The teams headed to halftime with TKC leading 2-0. Briana Solo of Sarah Lawrence made it 2-1 about 8 minutes into the second half on an assist from Sofia Jokela. But Genesis Castrellon, the leading scorer in both the HVIAC and USCAA would strike for her 27th, 28th and 29th goals in a span of 13 minutes to lengthen the TKC lead to 5-1. Castrellon showed her speed and poise as her first two goals came off breakaways, and she would knock in a nice Essex pass from the endline for the final goal of the day. The Lady Lions had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks and outshot the Gryphons 20-8. Annalise Bourgeois, Erika Hilliard and Ariel Mouser led the TKC defense in front of goalkeeper Victoria McAlister. Keyah Harvey provided pressure up front with her speed and Jordan Olson, Voleak Sroeung, and Maddie Whitlock were strong in the midfield. The Lady Lions improved their record to 10-3 and will now get ready for their 11/10 championship game against Albany Pharmacy.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—Concluding the Gryphons' first season as a varsity program, Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer fell to The King's College, 5-1, in a 2013 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship semifinal at College of Staten Island on Sunday.

No. 2 seed King's (10-3) was first on the scoreboard when Kasey Sisson netted a Lions goal in the seventh minute. Caitlin Essex expanded the King's lead in the 19th minute.

No. 3 seed Sarah Lawrence (3-10-1) was held to just one shot in the first half. Sophomore forward Lissette Hazoury (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Carol Morgan School) put a strike on-frame at the 35-minute mark, but TKC keeper Victoria McAlister rejected the attempt.

After trailing 2-0 at halftime, SLC cut into the lead in the opening minutes of the second half. Senior Sofie Jokela (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) fed the ball to sophomore Bri Solo (Laguna Beach, Calif./Trabuco Hills), who scored her second goal of the season to make it a 2-1 game.

SLC kept up the offensive pressure, recording three straight shots around the 60th minute. After Jokela sent a strike in the 61st minute, McAlister sent the ball the other way, and TKC's Genesis Castrellon went the length of the field to score her team's third goal. Less than two minutes later Castrellon scored again, quickly building a 4-1 lead for the Lions.

Castrellon rounded out the scoring in the 76th minute, completing her sixth hat trick of the season.

In goal, SLC keeper Addie Rosenberg (New York, N.Y./Fusion Academy) recorded seven saves in the game. McAlister ended the game with three saves.

In their first season as a varsity team, the Green and White took third place in the HVIAC regular-season standings and made a postseason appearance in their only year in the league. The program, along with 11 other SLC varsity teams, will transition to the Skyline Conference in 2014-15.
