BROOKLYN, N.Y. — No. 2 seeded The King's College used a balanced attack to defeat No. 3 seeded Five Towns College in straight sets to claim the 2019 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's volleyball championship on Sunday afternoon at the Pratt Institute Activity Resource Center.
Led by Tournament MVP Abby Roth (Temecula, Calif.), the King's College (12-6) captured their first league title in any sport. Roth handed out 21 assists as seven of the eight Lions to see the court contributed at least one kill each and hit .129 as a team. The freshman setter also put away three error-free kills of her own while serving a match-high seven aces, and chipping in four digs and one block on the defensive end.
Freshman Alex Kemsley (Austin, Texas) led the attack with a match-best 11 kills at a .364 clip along with six aces and freshman Avery Johnson (Fairburn, Ga.) added a near double-double with nine kills and seven digs.
Five Towns (3-14) was paced by freshman Lanasia Drain (Bay Shore, N.Y.) who had seven kills and one block. Junior libero Emily Angelastro (Seaford, N.Y.) brought up a match-high 15 digs for the league newcomers who made their first finals appearance.
The Lions controlled much of the contest, never trailing after five points into any set in a 25-9, 25-12, 25-15 triumph. King's put away 31 kills while holding Five Towns to just nine, and also used a strong service game from the end line, landing 19 aces.
