FLUSHING, N.Y. – Regular season champions Pratt Institute successfully defended their title en route to their third straight crown, producing seven of nine flight champions at the 2013 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday afternoon at the USTA Billy Jean King National Tennis Center.
Pratt completed their third straight unblemished season in league play with a 4-0 record and 11-2 overall, their only two losses coming in narrow 5-4 defeats, guided by first year head coach Sean Cummings who was recognized after the tournament as 2013 HVIAC women's tennis Coach of the Year.
The Cannoneers were led by No. 1 singles champion freshman Agata Jakubowska, who completed a perfect season in HVIAC play this season and dropped only three games en route to the singles title. Jakubowska paired with Sarah Conant for the No. 1 doubles championship, Conant also taking the No. 4 singles title, edging out Sarah Pyatt of Sarah Lawrence, 9-7, in one of the closest flight championship matches.
Gabriella Guerra (No. 3 singles/No. 2 doubles), Carson Stanch (No. 5 singles), Janet Lee (No. 6 singles) and Whitney Mills (No. 2 doubles) completed the flight winners for the Cannoneers.
Sarah Lawrence College finished five points behind the Cannoners in taking runner-up honors for the third straight year. The Grypgons were led by Kayla Pincus who brought home the No. 2 singles title and the duo of Autumn Atkinson and Juliette Slade who captured the No. 3 doubles title, grinding out a 9-7 victory in the final match of the afternoon, to preserve their perfect 6-0 record in the flight this season.
St. Joseph's College finished in third place, followed by The College of New Rochelle and Vaughn College to round out the team competition.
