Women's Volleyball Struck Down by Manhattanville

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—In the team's first action since splitting opening weekend matches, Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball was defeated by Manhattanville College, 3-0, in a non-conference match at Noyes Court on Wednesday.

Manhattanville (5-2) sprinted out to a 5-1 lead in the first set and built a 14-8 advantage near the midpoint. Sarah Lawrence (1-2) recovered to cut the gap at 15-12, but a 7-2 Valiant rally gave Manhattanville momentum in the 25-18 opening set.

The second set saw the Gryphons take their first lead of the day at 3-2 before Manhattanville regained the lead and went ahead 8-4. A string of 10 unanswered Valiant points spelled disaster for the Green and White, and the visitors won the second set 25-10.

SLC took control in the third set, leading by as many as seven points at 13-6. Manhattanville hung tough and scored six of the next seven points to advance the score to 14-12. The Valiants finally leveled the score at 20-20, and after a series of tie scores, Manhattanville finally triumphed 26-24.

Sarah Lawrence's Kitty O'Sullivan (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) led the Gryphon attack with seven kills and also picked up 12 digs in the match. Setter Janet Tonyan (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) assisted on 14 SLC kills, while sophomore Jomana Abdallah (Los Angeles, Calif./Fairmont Prep Academy) pitched in five kills.

For Manhattanville, Alissa Primavera led all players with 13 kills against just two errors. Setter Megan Quinabo set up 26 kills and led the defense with seven digs.

Sarah Lawrence returns to Noyes Court on Sunday for a non-conference tri-match featuring Mitchell College and Brooklyn College. Action begins at 11 a.m. at Campbell Sports Center.
