Women's Volleyball Falls to York

Box Score
BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Though the Gryphons had their chances, Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball was knocked off by York (N.Y.) College, 3-0, in a non-conference match at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Tuesday.

Sarah Lawrence (2-17) won the first five points of the match, but a 7-2 run for York (3-13) quickly erased the advantage. After the teams exchanged points to a 16-16 stalemate, the Cardinals scored four unanswered points that proved fatal in the 25-21 set.

In the second set, the Green and White crawled away to a four-point edge, 15-11. York snapped back into action, reversing the deficit with eight straight points. Trailing by six, the Gryphons put together a late five-point rally, but York sealed the deal in a 25-23 stanza.

Backed by three service aces from senior Jenai Richards (Kailua, Hawai'i/St. Andrew's Priory), SLC built its largest lead at 8-2 in the third set. A string of five Cardinal points disintegrated the advantage, and a 9-1 run by York all but sealed the win, as York clinched the victory with a 25-19 set.

SLC junior outside hitter Kitty O'Sullivan (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) posted her second double-double of the season, recording 10 kills and a match-high 12 digs. Richards finished the evening by matching her season high with five kills. Setter Janet Tonyan (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) notched 16 assists, surpassing 200 on the season.

York's Stayce Kay Muirhead led the match with 14 kills, while Cardinal setter Evelyn Florentino totaled two dozen assists.

Sarah Lawrence is on the road at Bard College on Saturday, facing the host Raptors at 1 p.m. and Maritime College at 3 p.m. The Gryphons then travel to Pratt Institute on Monday before returning to Noyes Court for their home finale on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. against Yeshiva University.
