Men's Volleyball Downed by Berkeley

Box Score
BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—In a non-conference men's volleyball match, Sarah Lawrence College fell to Berkeley College (N.J.), 3-0, at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Wednesday.

Berkeley (3-0) led wire-to-wire in all three sets to remain undefeated on the season.  In the opening set, Sarah Lawrence (1-7) cut into a 5-0 deficit to make the score 7-6, but the Knights responded with a 6-1 run and opened up a 20-10 lead en route to a 25-13 set.

In the second set, the Gryphons' defense held Berkeley to an 0.054 hitting percentage thanks to 13 digs by the pair of rookie Chris Manfugas (Teaneck, N.J., Teaneck) and sophomore Riley Smith (West Linn, Ore., Palo Alto (Calif.)). Once again, Sarah Lawrence rallied from an early shortfall to narrow the gap to one at 10-9. Berkeley, however, took a 16-10 lead and clinched the set at 25-17.

The third set saw Berkeley double-up the Gryphons at 10-5 and maintain strong momentum as the Knights cruised to a 25-16 win for the three-set sweep.

The Sarah Lawrence attack was led by three-time Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week Harrison Holmes (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Webb School), who notched five kills on the day. Smith and Manfugas shared a match-high 12 digs apiece, while junior setter Brent Terry (Crownpoint, N.M., Idyllwild Arts Academy) reached double-digit assists with 10.

Berkeley's Keith Barrow (Bloomfield, N.J., Bloomfield) and Abel Cedeno (Teaneck, N.J., Teaneck) led all players with 11 kills each, while Lucas Pucheta (Miami, Fla., Dr. Michael M. Krop) followed with 10. Setter Cristian Vega (Bloomfield, N.J., Bloomfield) had 16 assists, while Barrow had a match-high three blocks.

Sarah Lawrence returns to its home court on Saturday, when the Gryphons host York College and the Cooper Union for a tri-match slated to start at 11 a.m.
