Swimming Opens 2013-14 at Mt. St. Vincent Relays

Meet Results

YONKERS, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College men's and women's swimming opened the 2013-14 season at the Mount Saint Vincent Sprint Carnival at Mark Twain H.S. on Saturday. The Gryphons opened the year in style, breaking four College records as the women swam to a first-place finish and the men took second place on the day.

In the day's first race, SLC's knocked off the women's team's oldest relay record. Gabby Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett), Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes), Colette Harley (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) combined for a 200 medley relay time of 2:07.44, bettering the program's 2012 record by 0.11 second.

Race two saw the men's team step on to the blocks and set the day's second SLC record in as many races. Cameron Rudd (Portland, Ore./Portland Community College), Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)), Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) and Doug Rubenstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton) finished their 200 medley relay in 1:53.75, shattering last season's record with the Gryphons' first finish under two minutes.

After both Gryphon squads finished in third-place in the 200 yard backstroke relay, SLC took second place in the women's 200 yard breaststroke relay (2:46.88) with the foursome of Alayna Bone (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island), Monika Mednick (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton), Julia Aurik (Brussels, Belgium/International School of Brussels) and Jaime Chu (Hong Kong/Monte Vista).

The SLC men responded by also taking second place in the 200 breaststroke relay with the team of Chu, Martinez, Jericho Walker-Roberts (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) and Nick Ransom (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale).

Despite a one-second lead entering the final leg, SLC's 200 yard butterfly relay just missed the win as Amberchan, Pulitano, Dzana Ashworth (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) and Bone took second place.

Gryphons Risica, Harley, Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) and Quirk won the team's second race with a swim of 1:53.46 in the 200 yard freestyle relay, barely missing the school mark.

SLC's Chu, Walker-Roberts, Rubenstein and Martinez captured the men's second school record of the day, winning the 200 free relay in 1:39.50, an eight second improvement over last season's mark.

Back on the women's side, the SLC women took first place in each of their final two races. Pulitano, Quirk, Harley and Bates combined to win the 400 yard medley relay in 4:43.16. Then, Risica, Bates, Harley and Quirk rounded out the day by touching the wall first in the 500 yard freestyle relay (5:21.68).

The final College record to be broken was the men's 400 yard medley relay. Rudd, Chu, Martinez and Rubenstein made an 11-second improvement over last year's mark, touching the wall in 4:19.00 for third place.

In the final standings, SLC's women came away with the most points, while the men tied Purchase College for second place behind Elms College.

On Saturday, Nov. 3, SLC plays host to Brooklyn College, FDU-Florham, College of New Rochelle, St. Joseph's College Brooklyn and St. Joseph's College Long Island in the 2013 Sarah Lawrence Sprint Carnival. Action at Campbell Sports Center begins at 1:30 p.m.
