NEW YORK—Though the Gryphons went up a set to begin the match, Sarah Lawrence College men's volleyball lost to John Jay College of Criminal Justice, 3-1, in a non-conference contest at the Doghouse on Tuesday evening.
Eight quick errors by John Jay (2-7) gave Sarah Lawrence (1-13) a 12-6 lead in the opening set before the Bloodhounds notched three aces to close the gap to 12-11. From there, the Gryphons caught fire and went on a 14-4 run to close out a 25-15 first set. Sophomore
Harrison Holmes (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Webb School) led the attack with five kills while rookie
Chris Manfugas (Teaneck, N.J., Teaneck) contributed three kills in the set.
The Green and White kept momentum and broke open a 7-4 lead to start the second set until the hosts rallied to tie the set 8-8. The teams continued to exchange points back and forth for the remainder of the set, but John Jay eventually edged Sarah Lawrence, 25-23, to even the match at one set apiece.
Sarah Lawrence stormed to a 12-5 lead in the third set, capitalizing on four-straight Bloodhound errors. Holmes tallied four early kills while three other Gryphons contributed to the attack. The Gryphons held the advantage to 18-11 until John Jay began chipping away at the lead. The deficit stood at four with Sarah Lawrence in front 23-19, but the Bloodhouds refused to concede the set and eventually won, 29-27.
Energized by their late comeback in the previous set, the Bloodhounds maintained a firm grip in the fourth set. Trailing 17-10, Sarah Lawrence scored five unanswered points to narrow the deficit to 17-15; however, John Jay countered by scoring eight consecutive points to close a 25-15 set and clinch the victory.
Holmes led all players with 23 kills, falling one short of his own team record of 24 set on Sunday. Manfugas finished with five kills, three blocks and seven digs on the day. Sophomore
Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India, Inventure Academy) also tallied five kills and led the Gryphons with nine digs. Setter
Brent Terry (Crownpoint, N.M., Idyllwild Arts Academy) totaled 39 assists and seven digs.
For John Jay,
Jack Palleschi (Valley Stream, N.Y., Valley Stream South) picked up a double-double with a team-leading 14 kills and 12 digs.
Korede Griffith (Georgetown, Guyana, Brooklyn Prep.) added 10 digs on defense, and setter
Nicholas Anderson (Bellmore, N.Y., John F. Kennedy) had 25 assists.
Oshea Alexander (Brooklyn, N.Y., Erasmus Hall) led all players with four blocks.
Sarah Lawrence plays its final match on Friday before a spring-break hiatus. The Gryphons are set to host Purchase College at 7 p.m. at Campbell Sports Center.
