Men's Volleyball Falls in Season Openers

JAMAICA, N.Y.—In the team's first matches of the season, Sarah Lawrence College men's volleyball fell to Keuka College and to York College (N.Y.) by identical 3-0 margins in non-conference action at York College Gymnasium on Saturday.

In the Gryphons' opener, Sarah Lawrence (0-2) was toppled by Keuka, 25-12, 25-12, 25-12. Sophomore Harrison Holmes (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Webb) tallied the first kill of the season on a pass by junior Brent Terry (Crownpoint, N.M., Idyllwild Arts Academy). The first set also saw junior Ezra Marcus (Berkeley, Calif., Berkeley) notch the squad's first service ace of the year.

The Gryphons held their first lead of the season on the opening point of the second set and went up 2-0 to start the third set, but the Storm clinched comfortable wins in each of the three sets.

Holmes finished the match with a team-best seven kills, while Terry assisted on six points, and Marcus had two service aces. Sophomore Riley Smith (West Linn, Ore., Palo Alto (Calif.)) led the Gryphons with seven digs.

Keuka (1-2) earned its program's first-ever victory backed by a match-high nine kills from Connor Hinman (Lethbridge, Alberta, Catholic Central) and 22 assists from Ryan Kelly (Clifton Springs, N.Y., Midlakes).

In the Gryphons' second match, Sarah Lawrence held pace with the host Cardinals for much of the opening set. York (6-1) turned a 10-8 lead into at 14-8 advantage, but the Gryphons closed the gap to three at 18-15 before the set went 25-17 in favor of the hosts. York cruised to a 25-12 win in the second set and put away the third, 25-9.

Holmes led all players with 13 kills against York, and setter Terry had 15 assists. Marcus led the Gryphons with eight digs, and Holmes recorded the team's first block of the season.

For York, Avinash Thomas (Mavelikara, India, LIU-Post) led with eight kills and four digs. Jon Peter Sardea (Dededo, Guam, Father Duenas) had 22 assists and three aces.

Sarah Lawrence returns to the court on Wednesday, when the Gryphons head to face Yeshiva at 8 p.m. The Gryphons' home opener, a doubleheader against Wells College, is slated for Saturday, February 9 at 2 p.m.
