PURCHASE, N.Y.
– Torrential downpours and a looming tornado threat nearly halted the event, but Sarah Lawrence College men's cross country made its 2012 debut at the 5th Annual Purchase College Men's and Women's Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.

Four runners competed for the Gryphons, posting respectable times on the 8 km course. First-year Jack Califano (Baltimore, Md., The Park School of Baltimore) led the way for Sarah Lawrence, finishing in the top half of the field and taking 27th with a time of 33:53.5.

First-year Caleb Jaster (New Hampton, N.H., Sant Bani) followed three places later, finishing in 34:41.1. Sophomore Asher Morse (Falls Church, Va., George Mason) was the next Gryphon across the line, finishing the soggy course in 38:32.5, while senior Andy Clarke (Arlington, Mass., Arlington) rounded out the team's efforts in 40:12.7.

Head Coach Nephi Tyler was pleasantly surprised by his front-runner, Califano. “Jack showed that he is definitely a racer and looked the strongest I've seen him run this season. The best part of coaching is when you don't have to coach a runner in the final mile of the race—their drive to win trumps the pain; Jack had that today.

“Caleb [Jaster] got out fast for us in the early miles,” Tyler added. “He and Jack have been running great workouts this season, and I'm excited to see some big jumps from them, especially on a rained-out course.”
The Gryphons return to action next weekend, when they head to LIU Post on Saturday, Sept. 15.
