Women's Soccer Clipped by York, 3-2

Box Score

YONKERS, N.Y.—Though the Gryphons scored their first two goals in team history, Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer fell to York College (N.Y.), 3-2, in a non-conference game at Tibbetts Brook Park on Thursday. In the team's first home game of the season, Shannon Sullivan (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett Regional) and Elle Blanchet (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) notched the varsity program's first-ever goals.

"I'm very proud of the effort we put forth," noted SLC Head Coach Unity Beddingfield. "We are continuing to grow, and I'm happy to get not one but two goals into the history book."

York (1-1) struck early, getting on the scoreboard in the sixth minute. Jessica Cornejo served up a corner kick that found Daisy Narvaez, who struck first-blood. In the 35th minute, Cornejo assisted another Cardinal goal, this time on a free kick from near midfield; her pass found Anna Lales to give York a 2-0 halftime lead.

Sarah Lawrence (0-2) responded quickly in the second half. From well outside the penalty area, Sullivan weaved around the Cardinal defense. York goalkeeper Shanique Hill engaged the rookie forward at the 18-yard box but failed to stop the attack. Sullivan evaded the effort and, from six yards away, put the ball into the empty net.

York was not easily deflated and re-took a two goal lead when Narvaez collected a loose ball inside the penalty area and netted her second score of the day.

With time waning, junior Elle Blanchet (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) capitalized on a late foul to score the Gryphons' second goal in program history. On a direct kick, Blanchet slotted a magnificent shot from more than 30-yards out and cut the score to 3-2 with only 37 seconds remaining.

Following the play, York succeeded in running out the clock to clinch the win. SLC goalkeeper Addie Rosenberg (New York, N.Y./Fusion Academy) notched seven saves on the day.

Sarah Lawrence was slated to travel to NJCU on Saturday, but the game has been postponed due to a schedule conflict. SLC returns to action when the Gryphons host College of Mount Saint Vincent at Tibbetts Brook Park on Saturday, Sept. 11.
