Women’s Swimming Wins SLC Sprint Carnival Title

Meet Results

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—With the Gryphons competing in their home pool for the first time this season, Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming triumphed as the winner of the 2013 SLC Sprint Carnival at Campbell Sports Center on Saturday. The Green and White were tops in a field of six teams and had two team-record swims in the meet.

SLC accrued 210 points on the day, a full 45 points ahead of second place St. Joseph's College Long Island (165). Brooklyn College came in third with 86 points followed by The College of New Rochelle with 73 points. St. Joseph's College Brooklyn (62 points) and Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham (41) rounded out the field.

Sarah Lawrence also won the event in 2011; the 2012 edition was canceled due to Hurricane Sandy.

The Gryphons opened the day by duplicating the team's record in the 200 yard medley relay. Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton), Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes), Colette Harley (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and Gabby Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett) won the event and matched the team record of 2:07.44, set last week by Risica, Pulitano, Harley and Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn).

Quirk and teammate Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) picked up points in the 100 yard freestyle, taking second and third place with times of 1:02.67 and 1:04.88, respectively. Monika Mednick (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) posted a runner-up performance in her first individual swim, finishing the 50 yard breaststroke in 40.52.

SLC won its second event in the 100 yard butterfly, when Harley broke the oldest record on the Gryphon board. Harley touched the wall in 1:06.04, a three-plus second improvement over the previous record of 1:09.62 by L. Lee in 2001.

Risica kept the winning momentum going with a first-place swim of 27.37 in the 50 yard freestyle. Rookie Quirk and sophomore Alayna Bone (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) posted a one-two finish in the 100 yard individual medley with Quirk winning in 1:13.89 followed by Bone in 1:19.76.

The Gryphons also swept the 200 yard freestyle, as Harley (2:16.69) and Risica (2:22.84) were the first two swimmers to touch the wall, catapulting SLC into first place in the team standings.

Quirk won the day's final individual race, the 100 yard breaststroke, in a time of 1:21.97.

SLC completed the meet the same way the team started it—with a relay win. Quirk, Bates, Harley and Risica cruised to first place in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a swim of 1:53.30.

Sarah Lawrence will swim in its home pool again on each of the next two Saturdays. On November 9, the Gryphons host College of Mount Saint Vincent and SUNY Cobleskill, and on November 16 they swim a meet with Mount Saint Mary College and Brooklyn College. The women's team swims in its home finale against CNR on Friday, Nov. 22.
