Men's Soccer Falls in Regular-Season Finale

Box Score
BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Despite a free-kick goal by Rodrigo Cuenca (San Diego, Calif., La Jolla Country Day) to send the game into overtime, Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer concluded its regular season with an overtime loss to Berkeley College (N.Y.), 2-1, in a Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference (HVMAC) contest Wednesday at Aviator Sports Complex.

Berkeley's attack kept the pressure up early in the first half, with the Knights forcing three corner kicks in the first 15 minutes. In the 35th minute, Berkeley's Ahmet Colak (Istanbul, Turkey) redirected a pass from Steven Ramirez (Francis Perkins Academy, Brooklyn, N.Y.) to net the game's opening goal and put the hosts in front, 1-0.

The Knight's offense remained relentless in the second half with Berkeley totaling 18 shots in regulation. Between the posts, Sarah Lawrence goalkeeper Trevor Wallace (San Anselmo, Calif., Cate School) tallied ten saves in the first 90 minutes.

With less than 10 minutes in the second half, a Berkeley foul near the top of the penalty area gave the Gryphons a chance to even the score. Sarah Lawrence junior Cuenca capitalized on the free kick, evading Berkeley's wall and equalizing the game at 1-1.

After the second half concluded with the teams deadlocked, Berkeley's forwards came out firing in extra time. In the third-minute of the first overtime, Hasan Sezer (Istanbul, Turkey) slotted a pass through the Gryphon defense, and the sliding shot of Abdourahmane Gueye (New York, N.Y.) sealed the sudden-victory win for the Knights.

Wallace concluded the match with 12 saves, while Gryphon sophomore Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India, Inventure Academy) led Sarah Lawrence with two shots on goal.

By virtue of its earlier league wins, Sarah Lawrence (3-12, 3-3 HVMAC) clinched the No. 4 seed in this weekend's HVMAC Soccer Championship and will face top-seed Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in the semifinal round. Berkeley (5-9-2, 5-0-1 HVMAC) finished the season as the No. 2 seed and will host Culinary Institute of America in the other semifinal game.

Sarah Lawrence heads to ACPHS on Saturday, Oct. 27, for a 1 p.m. match to determine which team will play in the HVMAC Championship game Nov. 4 at Tibbetts Brook Park. The Gryphons' originally-scheduled finale against Yeshiva University has been canceled.
