Women's Volleyball Hit with First HVWAC Loss

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—After winning four-straight conference matches, the Gryphons' league slate incurred its first blemish, as Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball fell to St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 3-0, in a Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) contest Thursday evening at Noyse Court at Campbell Sports Center.

Sarah Lawrence (15-13, 4-1 HVWAC) clinches the No. 2 seed in the upcoming HVWAC Volleyball Championship tournament, while St. Joseph's (14-5, 6-0 HVWAC) secured the overall top seed and first round bye in the bracket.

The opening set saw Sarah Lawrence plagued by four attack errors in the first eight points, allowing St. Joseph to jump out to a 7-2 lead. The Gryphons rallied to tie the match, 10-10, but the Lady Bears pulled away to a 22-14 advantage. Though Sarah Lawrence put together a late 8-2 run, St. Joseph's escaped with a 25-22 set.

The set featured some of the longest rallies of the season, as the teams combined for 99 attacks. Sophomore Gryphon Kitty O'Sullivan (Los Angeles, Calif., Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) notched an impressive 11 digs in the set to lead the Sarah Lawrence defense.

After the teams exchanged the first eight points of the second set, the Lady Bears strung together a 10-2 run to take a 14-6 lead. The Gryphons whittled the lead down to two at 22-20, but the visitors won three of the final four points in St. Joseph's 25-21 set.

In the third set, Sarah Lawrence broke open a 4-0 lead before yielding the edge at 5-5. St. Joseph's matched the set's largest lead at 20-16 before the Gryphons tied the score at 22-22. The set featured 12 ties and five lead changes before St. Joseph's Brooklyn clinched a 27-25 set for the 3-0 sweep.

Rookie Jomana Abdallah (Anaheim, Calif., Fairmont Prep Academy) led all players with six kills in the final set; she totaled 11 in the match.

Defensive specialist Molly Busk (Corbett, Ore., Corbett) recorded her first career double-double as the rookie picked up 13 assists to complement 11 digs in the match. O'Sullivan had a match-high 11 digs, while first-year outside hitter Zoë Spanbroek (Boca Raton, Fla., Saint Andrew's) tallied 14 digs and eight kills.

For St. Joseph's, Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y., Fontbonne Hall) had a match-high 13 kills, while Kim Matthews (Breezy Point, N.Y., Bishop Kearney) posted a double-double with her 10 kills and 13 digs. Setter Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, N.Y., Miller) notched a double-double by way of 13 digs and 31 assists.

Sarah Lawrence wraps up HVWAC play when the team travels to face Medgar Evers College on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Gryphons host The City College of New York in their regular-season finale on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 6 p.m.

The season concludes with the HVWAC Volleyball Championship beginning with the quarterfinal round hosted by Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday, Nov. 3.
