Women's Swimming Splits on Senior Day

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Taking the team's first loss of the season, Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming split its match-ups in a double-dual meet at Campbell Sports Center on Saturday. The Gryphons lost to Mount Saint Mary College (3-2), 117-84, but defeated Brooklyn College (2-4), 142-59.

After the meet, seniors Dzana Ashworth (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) and Jaime Chu (Hong Kong/Monte Vista) were honored for their performances and commitment to the SLC women's swimming program.

The Green and White began the meet with a winning swim in the 400 yard medley relay. Gryphons Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes), Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn), Colette Harley (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and Gabby Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett) posted a time of 4:37.71 to give SLC an early lead in the team scoring. Mount Saint Mary then took the team lead by winning the next two events.

Pulitano, the reigning Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week, won the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 5:33.07, edging the field by a 2.5 second margin.

In the next event, Harley gave SLC another victory. The rookie won the 200 yard butterfly by touching the wall in 2:28.58, setting a new Green and White record by a difference of 21 seconds.

Pulitano picked up the Gryphons final victory by winning the 200 yard breaststroke. The junior completed the race in 2:54.75, winning by one second and missing the SLC record by two-thirds of a second.

The final race saw the Gryphons finish in second place in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Natasha Leonard (Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i/Kealakehe), Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton), Monika Mednick (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) and Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) completed their race in 4:28.59.

In addition to their four wins, the Gryphons had six third-place performances. Bates took third in the 1650 freestyle (21:01.53), Quirk was third in the 50 free (28.46), and HVIAC Rookie of the Week Risica was edged and took third in the 100 free (1:01.31). Amberchan took third place in the 200 backstroke (2:37.76), Harley earned third place in the 500 free (6:04.76), and Alayna Bone (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) finished the 200 breastroke in third place (3:08.36).

Sarah Lawrence women's swimming competes in its final home meet of 2013-14 on Friday. As part of SLC's Homecoming festivities, the Gryphons will host HVIAC rival College of New Rochelle for a 6 p.m. meet at Campbell Sports Center.
