Men's Cross Country Finishes Fourth at HVMAC Event

Race Results

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.
—Sarah Lawrence College men's cross country concluded its 2012 campaign with a fourth-place finish at the Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference (HVMAC) Cross Country Championship on Sunday. The finish marks the Gryphons' best-ever performance in the league's championship event.

First-year Gryphon Caleb Jaster (New Hampton, N.H., Sant Bani) led the team for the sixth-straight week, finishing the 8K course in 31:31, while securing 11th-place and honors as the league's top rookie.

“Caleb was determined to establish his position in the conference today,” noted Head Coach Nephi Tyler. “He made the gutsiest move of the season when he clawed his way from 22nd to 11th in the middle stages of the race, capping off an awesome year.”

Behind Jaster, sophomore Asher Morse (Falls Church, Va., George Mason) took two and a half minutes off his championship time from last season, finishing the course in 33:36, good for 22nd place overall.

First-year runner Jack Califano (Baltimore, Md., The Park School of Baltimore) returned from a hiatus to finish as Sarah Lawrence's No. 3 runner, crossing the line in 37:44. Rounding out the Gryphons' squad, first-year runners Ben LoPiccolo (Foster, R.I., Ponaganset) and Cassidy Bernstein (Brooklyn, N.Y., The Beekman School) followed with times of 38:18 and 38:19, respectively.

Sarah Lawrence's fourth place finish improves on a fifth-place showing at the 2011 event.

Yeshiva University walked away with the team championship, followed by Culinary Institute of America and Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. After the Gryphons, St. Joseph's College Brooklyn took fifth place, while Berkeley College (N.Y.) and Vaughn College failed to field a complete team.

All-conference teams will be announced by the league office later in the week.
