Women's Tennis Falls Short against Cedar Crest

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.
—Sarah Lawrence College women's tennis was nipped by Cedar Crest College, 5-4, in a non-conference match at Andrews Tennis Courts on Tuesday.

Cedar Crest (3-4) took an early lead, winning two of the three doubles matches. Sarah Lawrence (3-4) earned its doubles point in the No. 2 position. Rookies Juliet Slade (St. Paul, Minn./Central) and Autumn Atkinson (Manasquan, N.J./George School) won 8-4 to improve their season ledger to 6-0.

In singles play, SLC erased the deficit with the No. 6 match. Rookie Moni Spancheska (Skopje, Macedonia/NOVA International) defeated her Cedar Crest opponent, 6-3, 6-3, to level the team score at 2-2.

First-year player Sarah Pyatt (Taos, N.M./Taos) gave the Gryphons their first lead by winning the No. 4 singles match. She slipped past her Falcon foe, 7-5, 7-5, to give the Green and White a 3-2 lead in the match.

Cedar Crest came back with a win in the No. 3 match, but SLC went ahead again when  sophomore Nora Landes (Los Angeles, Calif./Cleveland Humanities Magnet) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1, victory in the top singles spot.

Atkinson, the reigning Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, was defeated 7-5, 7-5, in the No. 2 singles spot, and Cedar Crest closed out the win with a victory in the No. 5 position.

After starting the season 2-0, SLC has now lost four of its last five matches.

SLC's netters start a three-match road trip later in the week. The Gryphons will travel to face Cooper Union on Friday before taking on York on Tuesday. The series ends with a HVIAC match against Pratt on Saturday, Oct. 5.
