Women’s Basketball 20-Game Winners With Big Win Over Albany

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team dominated the Panthers from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) 94-30 in non-conference action on Timothy D. Hagerman Alumni Day Saturday, Feb. 8.

Prior to the contest, SMCC Athletics welcomed back both men's and women's basketball alumni, friends, and family in support of the annual Hagerman scholarship.

The SeaWolves converted 69 shot attempts on a 55.1 percent clip and 48.1 percent from beyond the arc. The home team was 5-6 from the free-throw line and ripped down 44 rebounds to score 18 second-chance points.

Transfer first-year Marley Groat (Durham, Maine) led all scorers in the game with 20 points knocking down 6-7 three-pointers. First-years Tara Flanders (Windham, Maine) and Grace Fontaine (Auburn, Maine) combined for 32 points—Fontaine with four triples on five attempts.

Emily D'Abrosca led the way for the Panthers with 10 points in 35 minutes of play.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Stannard commented, "A very effective shooting performance on our home floor boosts our confidence going into tournament play. However, all of the focus in our next two practices is aimed at Central Maine on Wednesday—we must rise to the occasion and play determined basketball in order to get a result in an otherwise tough environment."

SMCC climbs the mark to 20-4 overall; ACPHS sits at 9-10 on the year.

The action continues when the SeaWolves travel to Auburn, Maine to battle the defending United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national champion Mustangs of Central Maine Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
