BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—
In the final day of the 2013 SLC Volleyball Invitational, Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball split its matches, finishing the event in fourth place. The Gryphons started the day by defeating Maritime, 3-0, before falling to NJCU by an identical margin in non-conference matches at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Sunday.

At the conclusion of the two-day event, SLC setter Janet Tonyan (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) was honored as a member of the All-Tournament team.

In the team's first match, Sarah Lawrence (2-9) took a 6-1 lead in the opening set against Maritime (0-10). The Privateers leveled the match at 15-15, and the teams dueled back-and-forth until the Green and White resurfaced with a 26-24 win.

The second set saw SLC lead by as many as eight points, 16-8, en route to a 25-19 set. After a dramatic set that saw nine ties and three lead changes, SLC emerged from the third set with a 25-23 win to clinch the sweep.

SLC outside hitter Kitty O'Sullivan (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) matched her career high with 17 kills and rounded out her first double-double of the season with 10 digs. Tonyan had 25 assists, nine kills and five service aces.

Clarisse Taboy (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia/George School) helped the defense with eight digs, while Jenai Richards (Kailua, Hawai'i/St. Andrew's Priory) matched her season high with five kills.  In addition, rookie Monet Thibou (Brooklyn, N.Y./Elisabeth Irwin) spiked home her first two career kills.

NJCU (4-8) proved to be a more-challenging opponent, as the Gothic Knights held SLC to just 13 kills in the match. SLC led the first set, 20-17, but the visitors scored eight unanswered points to round out a 25-20 first set.

The second set saw eight ties and four lead changes, but NJCU capitalized on a 13-3 run to rally from a four-point deficit and cruise to a 25-18 win. In the third set, SLC chased NJCU and stayed within three points until the Gothic Knights won six straight points to round out the 25-18 set and complete the sweep.

O'Sullivan had seven kills in the latter match, finishing the weekend with 37 kills, second most among all five teams. Lin Zhu (Chengdu, China/Chengdu No. 7) led the defense with seven digs against NJCU. With five service aces in the final match, Tonyan totaled 13 on the weekend, securing her place as the third most-deadly server in the tournament.

With their 11-match homestand completed, SLC now takes to the road for the majority of the rest of 2013. The Gryphons travel to John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Tuesday and return to Noyes Court on Friday, October 4 against Lehman at 7 p.m.Â
