BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball struggled on Sunday, losing matches to Mitchell College, 3-0, and Brooklyn, 3-0, in a non-conference tri-match at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center.

The day started promising, with Sarah Lawrence (1-4) taking an 8-5 lead in the opening set against Mitchell (1-4). The tide turned quickly as MC's Jessica Ware served up 12 straight Mariner points, including five service aces. The visitors then scored the last five points of the 25-12 opening set.

In the second set, Mitchell took an early 6-2 lead and piled on eight unanswered points to open the gap to 16-5. SLC closed the gap to 20-12 and scored five straight points to narrow the margin at 23-17, but Mitchell eventually clinched the set, 25-17.

The Gryphons hung with the Mariners early in the third set but never took the lead. MC scored six of the last seven points to clinch the sweep with a 25-13 set.

Sarah Lawrence's offense was muffled in the match, as the Green and White tallied just seven kills. Jomana Abdallah (Los Angeles, Calif./Fairmont Prep Academy) anchored the defense with 13 digs, while rookie setter Janet Tonyan (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) notched six service aces.

For Mitchell, Gloria Charles led all players with nine kills, while setter Nicole Caminiti tallied 19 assists, and Ware finished the match with eight aces.

In match two, Mitchell and Brooklyn (2-3) dueled to a 32-30 opening set before the Bulldogs won in four sets, 32-30, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18.

SLC won two of the first three points against Brooklyn before the Bulldogs took the lead for good. Brooklyn won seven of eight points to take an 8-3 lead and cruised to a 25-12 opening set. The second set saw Brooklyn lead wire-to-wire, backed by a 12-0 run in the 25-5 set.

The third set saw the Gryphons take a 6-1 advantage and later lead 11-5. A 10-1 run swung momentum back in Brooklyn's favor, and the Bulldogs kept up the pressure in the 25-18 final set.

SLC rookie Yolanda Lyne Cando (Arlington, Va./H-B Woodlawn) led the Gryphons with four of their 12 kills. Junior Kitty O'Sullivan (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) tallied a team-high seven digs.
