Men's Volleyball Drops Two in Home Opener

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—In the Gryphons' home opener doubleheader, Sarah Lawrence College men's volleyball fell to visiting Wells College, 3-0, 3-0, in non-conference matches at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Saturday.

In the opening match, Wells (3-4) stormed through the opening set with a .524 kill percentage and perfect side-out rating. For the match, the Express totaled 35 kills on just five errors while throwing down 13 service aces.

Sarah Lawrence (0-5) went point-for-point to start the third set, which began 3-3, but the Wells offensive pressure kept the Gryphons from gaining any momentum as the Express picked up the 25-3, 25-13, 25-14 victory.

Gryphon sophomore Harrison Holmes (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Webb) totaled a match-high eight kills, while Wells' J.J. Podczasy (Macungie, Pa., Emmaus) duplicated the total. Green and White setter Brent Terry (Crownpoint, N.M., Idyllwild Arts Academy) led all players with eight digs and also contributed eight assists.

In the opening set of the second match, Harrison and Kamden Hilliard (Hililani, Hawai'i, Punahou School) each notched three kills, while six digs by Riley Smith (West Linn, Ore., Palo Alto (Calif.)) helped the Gryphons stay closer on the scoreboard. Still an 11-3 run gave the Express a 17-8 advantage and Wells closed out a 25-19 set.

The second set saw the Gryphons capitalize on several Wells errors. A pair of kills by Holmes and by Ezra Marcus (Berkeley, Calif., Berkeley) gave the hosts their largest lead of the season at 8-2. The tide turned when three service aces by Wells' John Faruggia (Mt. Markham, N.Y., Mt. Markham Central) helped the Express to a 10-1 run. Wells closed out the second set, 25-17.

The Gryphons rallied from a 4-1 deficit to lead the third set, 6-5, but the visitors stole momenutm with a 14-3 run and clinched the set, 25-14.

Holmes and Faruggia led their respective teams and the match with 10 kills apiece. Gryphon Smith topped all players with 11 digs, while Terry had 17 assists to his credit. Wells setter Derek Nipps (Turnersville, N.J., Washington Township) had 33 assists in the two matches combined.

Sarah Lawrence returns to its home court on Tuesday for a showdown against Albertus Magnus College at 7 p.m.
