PATCHOGUE, N.Y.—In the team's penultimate competition of the season, Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball was swept, 3-0, by Ramapo College, Manhattanville College and Farmingdale State College at the St. Joseph's College Long Island Invitational at Danzi Athletic Center on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday evening, Sarah Lawrence (3-23) squared off against Ramapo (14-10). The Gryphons were able to take early leads in the first and second set, but the Roadrunners proved to be a formidable opponent. SLC was held to seven kills against 17 attack errors, as Ramapo cruised to a 25-8, 25-8, 25-10 victory.
The Green and White offense struggled again in Saturday's match against Manhattanville (15-13). The Valiants put away 23 kills to the Gryphons' four in a 25-3, 25-3, 25-7 drubbing.
In the Gryphons final match of the weekend, SLC dueled with Farmingdale State (11-19) late into a 25-23 opening set. The Rams were in full control of a 25-5 second set, and the Gryphons tallied only three kills in the third set, 25-16.
For the weekend,
Jomana Abdallah (Los Angeles, Calif./Fairmont Prep Academy) led Sarah Lawrence with nine kills, while senior
Jenai Richards (Kailua, Hawai'i/St. Andrew's Priory) followed with seven successful spikes. Richards also led the team with three service aces, while setter
Janet Tonyan (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) racked up 15 assists.
On defense,
Clarisse Taboy (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia/George School) anchored the Gryphons with 17 digs, while
Yolanda Lyne Cando (Arlington, Va./H-B Woodlawn) tallied 11 digs. Cando and Richards each notched a solo block.
Sarah Lawrence wraps the 2013 season on Tuesday, when the Gryphons travel to St. Joseph's College Brooklyn for a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at 7:30 p.m.
