Men's Cross Country 5th at HVIAC Championship

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Backed by a pair of medalists, Sarah Lawrence College men's cross country took fifth place at the 2013 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Championship at Bard College on Sunday.

All six Gryphons set new 8K personal bests on the Bard course.

Rookie Pat Newsom (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) finished as the Gryphons' top runner, taking 16th place in a time of 29:57. The feat marked Newsom's first time leading the team and a 1:40 improvement over his previous best. SLC front-runner Caleb Jaster (New Hampton, N.H./Sant Bani) finished just behind in 17th place at 29:58, a personal best by 47 seconds.

First-year runner Stian Lothe (Bergen, Norway/Akademiet Bergen) was the next Gryphon across the line, finishing in 39th place with a mark of 34:55, just outside 7-minute mile pace. Classmate Justin Heftel (Spokane, Wash./Saint George's School) crossed the line in 41st place, stopping the clock at 36:00.

Senior Luc Mitchell (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) rounded out his career with a mark of 36:57, good for 42nd place, and rookie Jacob Zhu (Shanghai, China/Shanghai Jianping) rounded out the team in 44th at 38:48, nearly five minutes faster than his previous best.

Sarah Lawrence is scheduled to conclude its season at the Nick Russo Halloween Classic, hosted by NJIT on Sunday, Nov. 3.
