Women's Volleyball Splits Saturday Matches

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Gryphons snapped a 10-match skid, as Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball split a pair of non-conference matches at Bard College on Saturday. After falling, 3-0, to the host Raptors, SLC rebounded to defeat Maritime College, 3-0, to round out the day.

Sarah Lawrence (3-18) took a 7-4 advantage in the opening set against Bard (3-19) but the Raptors scored seven straight points to regain the lead. SLC closed the gap to one point at 23-22, but Bard closed out the first set, 25-22.

Bard scored the first 11 points of the second set and led wire-to-wire in a 25-13 stanza. The third set again saw the Green and White take a three-point lead, but an 11-3 run by the Raptors put the hosts in front. SLC nipped back at 20-19, but Bard won five straight points to clinch the sweep with a 25-19 set.

For SLC, senior Jenai Richards (Kailua, Hawai'i/St. Andrew's Priory) and junior Kitty O'Sullivan (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) shared a team-high six kills, and both tallied seven digs in the match. Setter Janet Tonyan (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) pitched in 11 assists and five kills while leading the defense with nine digs. Richards also set a career-high with two solo blocks.

Bard's Tytravia Riley posted a match-high eight kills, while Daniella Azulai was the only player to post double-digit digs with 13.

In the Gryphons' second match, SLC built a five-point opening-set lead at 18-13 versus Maritime (1-16).  The Privateers fought back and tied the match at 19-19, and the two teams dueled until Sarah Lawrence finally triumphed, 28-26.

With the second set deadlocked at 11-11, the Green and White went on an 11-1 spree, taking the second set in a 25-14 rout. In the third set, SLC's 14-7 advantage was erased by seven unanswered Privateer points. Maritime held set point at 24-23, but SLC remained focused and took the match with a 27-25 set. The win cracked a 10-match losing streak for the Gryphons.

O'Sullivan reached double-figures with 10 kills in the match, while Tonyan again led the defense with nine digs to accompany 17 assists. Richards added seven digs and seven kills.

Maritime's Charlotte Acklin posted seven kills, setter Christine McCormak had 14 assists, and Alyssa Pourmonir led the team with 14 digs.

On the day, Tonyan totaled 10 kills, while Clarisse Taboy (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia/George School) recorded 12 digs, and Yolanda Lyne Cando (Arlington, Va./H-B Woodlawn) notched 11 digs. Monet Thibou (Brooklyn, N.Y./Elisabeth Irwin) scored three kills, and Lin Zhu (Chengdu, China/Chengdu No. 7) pitched in a kill and three digs.

Sarah Lawrence travels to face Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Pratt Institute on Monday at 7:30 p.m. The Gryphons then return to Bronxville for their home finale versus HVIAC foe Yeshiva University on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
