Men’s Volleyball Drops Pair in Tri-Match

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Gryphon Harrison Holmes (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Webb School) posted an incredible 33 kills in eight sets but Sarah Lawrence College was unable to hold on in either of its matches, falling to Yeshiva University, 3-2, and to Berkeley College (N.J.), 3-0, in a tri-match at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Sunday.

In the day's opening match, Sarah Lawrence (1-12, 1-3 HVMAC) was toppled by Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference opponent Yeshiva (4-16, 3-0 HVMAC) in the Gryphons' first five-set match of the season.

The first set saw the Gryphons jump out to a 13-6 advantage over the Maccabees, and the Green and White stayed in front to 21-14. Yeshiva went on a 6-1 run to cut the gap to two at 22-20, but Sarah Lawrence closed out the set 25-20.

The Sarah Lawrence attack faltered in the second set, as the Gryphons committed seven attack errors to just six kills, allowing Yeshiva to level the match with a 25-12 set.

The Gryphons rebounded in the third set, backed by five kills from Holmes. Sarah Lawrence doubled-up Yeshiva at 16-8 and the gap never shrunk below five points as the hosts won the set, 25-17.

Holmes posted a program record nine kills in the fourth set and the Gryphons were one point from victory at 24-22. A Yeshiva timeout iced the Sarah Lawrence attack, and the Maccabees rattled off three straight and five of the final six points of a 27-25 set.

In the deciding set, Yeshiva's attack was almost unstoppable. The Maccabees tallied eight kills on ten attacks and clinched the match with a 15-9 set.

Holmes totaled a team-record 24 kills in the match. Rookie Chris Manfugas (Teaneck, N.J., Teaneck) picked up 14 digs in the match, while setter Brent Terry (Crownpoint, N.M., Idyllwild Arts Academy) notched 39 assists on the Gryphons' 42 kills.

Yeshiva also totaled 42 kills, with Daniel Lapson (Skokie, Ill., Ida Crown Jewish Acad.) and Menachem Goldstein (Chicago, Ill., Fasman Yeshiva) picking up 14 kills apiece. Setter Adam Rhodes (Los Angeles, Calif.,YULA) assisted on 26 points, while Elchanan Margolis (Toronto, Ontario, YOC) led all players with 16 digs.

Goldstein and first-year Gryphon Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas, Aledo) shared a match-high three blocks.

In the day's second match, Berkeley defeated Yeshiva by a 3-1 decision (12-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-19).

Berkeley (6-3) carried its momentum into its match with Sarah Lawrence, as the Knights came away with the straight-sets victory—the team's second against the Gryphons this year.

After Sarah Lawrence won the first three points of the match, the teams dueled to a 14-14 stalemate. From there, Berkeley scored seven of the next nine points to take a 21-16 edge. The Gryphons were unable to recover as the Knights won the opening set, 25-21. Sophomore Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India, Inventure Academy) anchored the Sarah Lawrence defense with five digs in the set.

The second set again saw the Sarah Lawrence attack struggle. The Gryphons faltered on seven attacks against just three kills, and Berkeley won 10 of the 12 points served up by the hosts. Berkeley clinched the second set, 25-12.

In the third set, Manfugas' defensive effort—nine digs in the set—kept the Gryphons in contention throughout. Still, the Knights proved unstoppable late in the set, and Berkeley converted a 20-20 tie into a 25-21 set to clinch the sweep.

The match saw Holmes lead the Gryphons with nine kills, while Terry totaled 17 assists. Pujari added five kills in the match for a total of 14 on the day. Manfugas notched five kills with a match-high 13 digs, while libero Riley Smith (West Linn, Ore., Palo Alto (Calif.)) also hit double-digits with 11 digs. First-year player Cameron Rudd (Portland, Ore.) had a match-high three blocks and four stuffs on the day.

For Berkeley, Abel Cedeno (Teaneck, N.J., Teaneck) led all players with 11 kills, while Lucas Pucheta (Miami, Fla., Dr. Michael M. Krop) reached double figures with 10 kills. Setter David Jimenez (Teaneck, N.J., Teaneck) assisted on 29 of 32 kills for the Knights.

Sarah Lawrence returns to action with a road showdown against John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Gryphons return home for their final match before spring break, hosting Purchase College at 7p.m. on Friday.
