BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Though Gryphon
Harrison Holmes (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Webb School) led all players with 14 kills, Sarah Lawrence College men's volleyball fell to St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 3-0, in a Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference (HVMAC) match at Brooklyn Technical High School on Friday.
The loss levels the Gryphons' series with the Bears at 1-1 on the year after Sarah Lawrence defeated St. Joseph's, 3-1, on February 15.
A set of errors put Sarah Lawrence (1-10, 1-2 HVMAC) put the Gryphons in a 3-0 hole to start the first set, but the Green and White rallied to take a 15-9 advantage. St. Joseph's (1-5, 1-2 HVMAC) responded by going on a 7-1 run to level the set at 16-16. The set continued to a 22-22 tie until the Bears scored three of the final four points of the 25-23 set.
Sarah Lawrence built its largest lead of the second set at 8-4 and kept control until St. Joseph's took the lead at 16-15. The Bears capitalized on seven Gryphon errors late in the set, giving the hosts a 25-19 set.
In the third set, St. Joseph's College scored nine straight points en route to a 16-6 lead. Sarah Lawrence cut into the gap with a 4-0 run, but the Bears pulled out a 25-15 set to complete the sweep for their first victory of the season.
Holmes' 14 kills mark his sixth double-figure total of the season. Sarah Lawrence setter
Brent Terry (Crownpoint, N.M., Idyllwild Arts Academy) racked up 19 assists and a team-high four service aces in the match. Sophomore
Riley Smith (West Linn, Ore., Palo Alto (Calif.)) picked up seven digs in the team's first match playing with a libero. Rookie
Cameron Rudd (Portland, Ore.) had a team-best and season-high two blocks in only his sixth match of the year.
For the Bears,
Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla., Colonial) notched 10 kills followed by
Martin Torres (Ozone Park, N.Y., St. Francis Prep) with nine. Setter
Iqbal Husain (West Palm Beach, Fla., Palm Beach Gardens) had 18 assists, while Torres led all players with 10 digs. Ushela contributed a match-high eight blocks.
Sarah Lawrence returns home for its next match. The Gryphons host Regis College on Friday, March 8, at 7 p.m. The team then hosts a tri-match on Saturday, March 10, starting at 11 a.m.
