Men's Volleyball Drops Pair in Tri-Match

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Despite the 22 kills of sophomore Harrison Holmes (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Webb School), Sarah Lawrence College men's volleyball lost both legs of its tri-match, falling to York College, 3-0, and Cooper Union, 3-0, at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Saturday.

In the day's neutral-site match, York defeated Cooper Union by a 3-0 margin [25-16, 25-18, 25-16].

In the opening match, York (10-4) broke open a 14-8 lead in the first set and went on a 7-4 run to extend the advantage to 21-12 before winning the set, 25-16.

After Sarah Lawrence (1-9) won the first point of the second set, the Cardinals exploded to take a 15-2 lead. Though sophomore Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India, Inventure Academy) served up a pair of service aces to send the Gryphons on a late 4-0 streak, York clinched the set at 25-12.

Sarah Lawrence led the third set, 2-0, before York took a 6-2 edge. The Gryphons responded to retake the lead at 9-8 and were in front again at 12-11. York, however, stole momentum late in the set, and the Cardinals turned a 16-16 deadlock into a 25-16 set to clinch the victory.

Holmes led all players with 12 kills in the match. Junior Brent Terry (Crownpoint, N.M., Idyllwild Arts Academy) had 14 assists in the contest.

For York, Emmanuel Geffrard (Arcahaie, Haiti, Queensborough CC) and Leszek Stankiewicz (Iychy, Poland, Newcomers) shared a team-high nine kills, while setter Jon Peter Sardea (Dededo, Guam, Father Duenas) had 35 assists. Geffrard posted a match-high five aces, while Avinash Thomas (Mavelikara, India, LIU-Post) led the teams with five blocks.

Sarah Lawrence broke open a 6-0 lead to start its match against Cooper Union, but the Hawks closed the gap to level the set at 11-11. The Green and White regained the advantage at 15-11, but Cooper Union tied the set again at 19-19. The teams dueled to a 24-24 stalemate until the visitors finally closed out the 26-24 set.

Rookie Chris Manfugas (Teaneck, N.J., Teaneck) notched three consecutive service aces early in the second set, earning the Gryphons a three-point lead at 5-2. Cooper Union swept away the deficit to tie the set at 5-5 before rattling off seven unanswered points to lead 18-9. Cooper Union won the set 25-14.

After the Hawks took a 5-1 lead in the third set, Sarah Lawrence scored five straight to take a 6-5 lead. The advantage was fleeting, as Cooper Union rebounded to go ahead 11-8 and stretched the margin at 16-10. The Gryphons came within two points at 17-15 but an 8-2 run gave Cooper Union the 25-17 set to round out the sweep.

Holmes again hit double-digit kills with 10 spikes in the second match. Terry had 15 assists, while Manfugas led Sarah Lawrence with four aces. Sophomore Riley Smith (West Linn, Ore., Palo Alto (Calif.)) totaled a team-high 12 digs on the day, while Holmes led the Sarah Lawrence front row with six blocks in the two matches.

For Cooper Union, Matthew Lee (West Windsor, N.J., West Windsor Plainsboro South) and Jeffrey Tam (Plainsboro, N.J., West Windsor Plainsboro South) each had a team-high nine kills. Setter Jonathan Ostrander (Greenlawn, N.Y., Harborfields) posted 26 assists, while Sasha Kutznetov (St. Petersburg, Russia, Green Meadow) had nine digs in the match.

Sarah Lawrence's next scheduled match is a home contest against Regis College slated for Friday, March 8. Action at Campbell Sports Center begins at 8 p.m.
