Men's Soccer Rallies, Falls Short of Fisher

Box Score
YONKERS, N.Y.—Nearly rallying from a three-goal deficit, Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer fell just short against Fisher College, falling 5-4 in a high-scoring, non-conference game at Tibbetts Brook Park on Saturday.

The game marked the Gryphons' final home game of the 2013 season. Ten SLC seniors were recognized at the game: captains Aman Banerji (New Delhi, India/The Shri Ram School) and Phil London (New York, N.Y./Horace Mann) as well as Rodrigo Cuenca (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla Country Day), Kevin Russel (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase), Julian Bonte-Friedheim (Milan, Italy/International School of Milan), Evan Humphris (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), Uday Keith (Chandigarh, India/Woodstock School), Luc Mitchell (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), Philip Naess (New York, N.Y./United Nations International School) and Forrest Watson III (Zebulon, Ga./The Campus (Peachtree City))

Officially, the first four shots of the game all hit the back of the net. Fisher (5-11) opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Tyler Gahara netted a shot on a through-pass by Caio Gomes.

Less than 90 seconds later, Sarah Lawrence (3-13) evened the score when junior Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India/Inventure Academy) capitalized on a combo pass by Gryphons Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela/ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)) and Tahmid Munat (Dhaka, Bangladesh/Notre Dame). Pujari's successful strike made it a 1-1 game after just 10 minutes.

Gahara added his second goal in the 13th minute, and he rounded out a hat trick with another score in the 16th minute, putting the Falcons up 3-1 and delivering a crippling blow to the Gryphons.

Sarah Lawrence responded with a flurry of four shots in the next ten minutes, including strikes by Cuenca, Sucre and Pujari.

In the 41st minute, Gahara netted his team-leading 20th goal of the season. Despite three late shots by Cuenca and Banerji, the Gryphons went into halftime with a 4-1 disadvantage.

Early in the second half, Falcon offensive pressure yielded two shots and three quick corner kicks. After the third corner, SLC took the ball the other way. A long, accurate pass by Cuenca left Pujari alone in the front field, and the junior converted the chance, cutting the gap to 4-2.

In the 61st minute, the Falcons responded when Fisher's Jerry Dieudonne scored his second goal of the season to make it a 5-2 game.

Less than two minutes later, SLC's Sucre took advantage of a loose ball and netted his first goal of 2013 to trim the Fisher lead to 5-3.

After a scoreless 13 minutes, Pujari completed the day's second hat trick, scoring his team-high 13th goal of the season after a breakaway at midfield. Despite a pair of strong Green and White shots, the Falcons were able to keep the ball out of the net for the remainder of the game, and SLC came away with the 5-4 defeat.

Fisher goalie Yves Charles earned the win with three saves in the game. SLC's Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) was credited with the loss, despite stopping eight shots on goal.

Sarah Lawrence concludes the 2013 campaign with a trip to Yeshiva University on Thursday. Halloween action kicks off at 8:30 p.m. at Farleigh Dickinson University Soccer Field in Teaneck, N.J.
