NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Vaughn College junior Michael Peña was named the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball Player of the Year as the league announced the members of the All-HVIAC Men's Basketball Team at the conclusion of the 2015-16 HVIAC Tournament at the College of New Rochelle.
Peña led Vaughn to their best record in program history and highest finish in conference play finishing in second. A five-time Player of the week selection, Pena joined the 1,000-point scoring club this season and led the league in scoring averaging 23.3 points on 48.4 percent shooting in conference play this season with a solid all-around effort adding 4.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.3 steals.
The King's College freshman Trivette Knowles was selected as Rookie of the Year. The guard averaged 13.9 points, 11.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists in league games this season. The two-time Rookie of the Week highlighted his season with a 16-point, 17-rebound, 12-assist triple-double against Albany Pharmacy.
In total, 14 men received All-Conference recognition for outstanding play throughout the season and three were repeat honorees.
Leading their squads to the top two positions in conference play, Berkeley College head coach Chris Christiansen and Vaughn College head coach Ricky McCollum were named Co-Coaches of the Year.
The HVIAC All-Conference Team, Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year are selected by the conference's men's basketball coaches based on regular season conference play.
