NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — SUNY College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry senior Ryan Caldwell was named the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball Player of the Year as the league announced the members of the All-HVIAC Men's Basketball Team at the start of the 2017 HVIAC Tournament at The College of New Rochelle.
Caldwell averaged 24.0 points and 10.0 rebounds over eight league games posting double-doubles in five of them. The versatile guard/forward who earned Player of the Week honors four times this season shot 67.5 percent from the field leading the Mighty Oaks to its first winning season and becoming the first player to score 1,000 points in program history.
The College of New Rochelle freshman Hunter Schenkel was named the league’s Rookie of the Year averaging 19.3 points in league contests including a 35-point effort against defending champion Berkeley College. The forward from Sayville, N.Y. collected four weekly awards this season, named Player of the Week once and Rookie honors three times.
In total, 16 men received All-Conference recognition for outstanding play throughout the season and six are repeat honorees with Vaughn senior guard Michael Pena earning the award for the fourth time.
Leading the Mighty Oaks to their first winning season and the HVIAC Tournament for the second straight year, Scott Blair was tapped the league’s Coach of the Year.
The HVIAC All-Conference Team, Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year are selected by the conference's men's basketball coaches based on regular season conference play.
