The Berkeley College men's basketball team picked up a pair of much-needed victories this weekend. On Saturday, the Knights commandingly defeated HVIAC foe Word of Life (1-13 Overall, 0-5 HVIAC) by a score of 95-40. Then, earlier today, Berkeley defeated the Panthers of Albany College of Pharmacy (6-7 Overall, 3-1 HVIAC) by a score of 70-51.
With the pair of triumphs, not only did the Knights get back to the .500 mark on the season (8-8), but Berkeley also stayed undefeated in Regional action, catapulting to a mark of 4-0 in HVIAC contests.
In the Knights win over the Huskies, Berkeley was paced by Daquan Jackson, as he recorded another double-double with game-highs of 17 points and 18 rebounds. He also recorded three assists, tallied two steals, and swatted a pair of shots. Joshua Hardy connected on eight of his 16 attempts from the floor to finish with 16 points. He also snatched eight rebounds, piled three dimes, and tallied a pair of steals. Denzel Bush also netted 16 points while grabbing seven boards and registering a game-high four steals. Finally, it was Jerell McLeod played well, scoring 13 points and recording four dimes.
Despite the loss for Word of Life, the Huskies were led by Peter Brandel, as he scored a team-high 13 points while snatching five rebounds. Quentin Lackey finished with 11 points and four boards, and Jizeah Rivera added five points, a pair of rebounds, and two assists.
Berkeley connected on 44.2 percent of its attempts from the floor (42-95), while the Huskies converted on just 17 shots all afternoon (17-64, 26.6 percent). The Knights dominated in the rebounding department, snatching 64 boards compared to 32 for the opposition. Berkeley turned the ball over only 12 times compared to 24 miscues for Word of Life.
In the Knights win over Albany College of Pharmacy, Jackson was sensational again, tying for the game-high of 20 points and snatching eight boards while registering two steals. Hardy scored 11 points, added seven rebounds, tallied two assists, and had two steals.
For Albany College of Pharmacy, Jordan Simmons scored 20 of his team's 51 points, draining seven of his 17 attempts from the floor. He also snatched a game-high 14 rebounds, while also tallying two assists. Nate Beltran also had a solid performance, scoring 15 points, adding a game-high eight steals, snatching four rebounds, and finishing with two assists.
Neither team shot particularly well from the floor in what was a relatively low-scoring game, as the Knights converted on 26 of their 69 shots (37.7 percent), with Albany hitting on 32.2 percent of its attempts (19-59). Berkeley won the game despite getting out-rebounded by a count of 44-39. The Knights held a slim 12-11 edge in the assists, while also turning the ball over just 17 times compared to 24 miscues for Albany.
