2008 Tournament MVP

Ryan Michonski •  Albany College of Pharmacy
Sophomore •  Midfielder  •  Southwick, MA

Albany Pharmacy sophomore Ryan Michonski scored on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute to net the game’s only goal as Albany Pharmacy ended the two-year reign of the Culinary Institute of America, 1-0 in the Hudson Valley Men’s Athletic Conference Soccer Championship Game on Nov. 1 at the Culinary Institute of America. It was a hotly contested match-up that saw both teams share their share of scoring opportunities, and both goalkeepers combine for more than 40 saves. Michonski led ACP to the Tournament Championship in its first season in the HVMAC after the Panthers finished second to Culinary Institute of America during the regular season. The Panthers defeated Cooper Union, 7-0 in the HVMAC Semifinals behind Michonski’s strong midfield play.

2008 Coach of the Year

Michael Murphy •  Culinary Institute of America

For the third consecutive season, Culinary Institute of America Head Men’s Soccer Coach Michael Murphy has been voted the HVMAC Coach of the Year, after leading the Steels to their second straight HVMAC Regular Season Championship, and their third straightTournament Championship Game. While CIA fell to Albany Pharmacy in the Tournament Championship Game, Culinary enjoyed a spectacular season, finishing 6-5-1 overall during a season with an expanded schedule that included an overtime loss to Skyline  Conference powerhouse Mount Saint Mary, a win over Elmira College, and a tough battle against a very good New Hampshire Tech team. In conference play, the Steels won their first three games, outscoring their opponents 13-2, before they were tripped up by Cooper Union on Oct. 19. During Murphy’s tenure at Culinary, the Steels have lost a combined total of only four HVMAC games.
